Worleston Virtuosi

Soloist Wissam Boustany

Returning from a recent outstanding performance of the Beethoven Septet this year we have expanded the group to feature one of the most incredible Chamber Works in the repertoire Spohr’s wonderful Grand Nonet. Spohr was very popular in his time, however being a contemporary of Beethoven and Mozart but was somewhat overshadowed and fell into relative obscurity after his death. He invented the violin chin rest, rehearsal marks in music and straddled the classical and romantic period!

Wissam Boustany will be performing as soloist in a Mozart Flute Quartet. Do you remember him improvising and performing Alwyn’s epic Flute Concerto in the Wind Concert in 2019?

2019 Concert Series

Concert review for 5th October 2019

We were lucky enough to attend the Chamber Concert in Nantwich which included the Alwyn Concerto for Flute and eight wind instruments with soloist Wissam Boustany, the evening was a concert of music performed at the very highest level including staff from the RNCM. We brought a number of students from Shrewsbury School, all thoroughly enjoyed the evening and enjoyed watching professional musicians performing rather than being the performers themselves for a change. The repertoire was varied and included works from a range of periods which created a varied and entertaining program. The ensemble consisted of wind and horns and the music was extremely tight with precision and detail in every note. The highlight for myself was Wissam Boustany's improvisation which really captured the audiences attention, taking them to a far and distant land!

We are extremely lucky to have the amazing concert series so close and I can only look forward to future events.

Music of Guy Woolfenden OBE: conductor Dr Tim Reynish

6pm 23rd October 2016

at Worleston Village Hall, Main Road Worleston, CW5 6DN

Please click here for a recent obituary of Guy Woolfenden OBE

For those that have been to our previous 2 concerts this performance will feature a new instrument to our wind ensemble – the flute.

Tim Reynish, who spoke movingly at the funeral of a life long friend, fellow horn player and colleague, Guy Woolfenden OBE, is coming again to Worleston to conduct 2 of Guy’s wonderful wind chamber works. Guy spent 27 years as music director at the Royal Shakespeare Company in Stratford-upon-Avon, so much of his music has been influenced by Shakespeare.

Woolfenden’s lovely serenade Suite Française for 8 woodwind instruments (that’s pairs of flutes, oboes, clarinets and bassoon), was commissioned and dedicated to Val Brodie, director of music of Rugby Music Centre and first performed at Rugby Music Festival on May 22nd 1991. Guy conducts Suite Française https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j9OVUSpu6gg&app=desktop

The delightful Serenade for Sophia, was written to celebrate the birth of Guy’s first grandchild and is dedicated with love and affection to her. This piece contains a Caribbean influence in the 2nd movement entitled Dance which is based on a Calypso. His music is thoroughly original and witty. The music is written for complete wind dectet which is pairs of flutes, oboes, clarinets, horns, and bassoons.

The other works in the concert are by the Frenchman Charles Gounod – his exceptional Petite Symphonie for wind nonet (that’s one flute, and pairs of oboes, clarinets bassoons and horns) composed in 1888.

Also the exciting and dramatic Sinfonietta by the Swiss born German Romantic composer Joachim Raff for full wind dectet written in 1873.

The next concert features the international recognised solos pianist Andrew Wilde on piano in Mozart’s Piano and Wind Quintet in Eb. on 13th November 2016

The first Worleston Music School student recital will now take place at St Oswald’s Church at 4pm on Saturday, 18th February 2017. This is a charity concert and all funds raised will go to the St Oswarld’s Church and to Worleston Primary School for their Mini bus appeal, so please come and give generously.

Many thanks,

Andrew Bassey
